Workshop #8: Beyond Vinegar--Green Cleaning with Science + Nature

Most of us know intuitively that green cleaning is the better choice than a bucket of bleach and a hose but very few of us know exactly why. Find out what’s lurking under your sink and how the chemicals in modern cleaners may be affecting our bodies and our planet. Adrian Ruddock, founder of Mother B Green Cleaning and Home Services, will share her secrets as a professional using only EPA "green certified" and homemade products. After taking this class you’ll know:

+How to make safe choices when you’re confused in the cleaning aisle at Target
+How to effectively kill germs using botanicals
+The difference between the jargon antibacterial, antimicrobial and germicidal and why you should care
+The essentials in a pro’s green cleaning kit

We’ll also be making some great smelling, wonderfully effective cleaners using products you may already have in your kitchen (and psssst , it’s not vinegar). You may actually want to clean! Bring a spray bottle or jar to take some cleaner home with you.

This workshop will take place at The Logan Share at 2864 N Milwaukee Avenue from 6-7:30 pm on Monday, March 30th. Tickets are $20 and are available through Dabble.

For more information about Homestead Logan Square, visit our Facebook Page. To learn more about Adrian and Mother B's sustainable and socially just business practices, visit her website at http://www.motherbgreen.com/

Workshop #6: Rise Up! An Introduction to Sourdough Bread

Fresh Baked Bread Loaf on Rustic Wooden Table - Top View - Five Point Holistic Health

Who doesn't love a good slice of sourdough bread with its characteristic flavor, chewy texture, and crispy crust? Sourdough is unique because it doesn't require commercial yeast to rise, and its long fermentation makes it more easily digestible for the body. But even the most experienced amateur bakers can be intimidated by sourdough starters, which is why we called in some professionals.

Ethan Pikas and Tony Bezsylko, chefs and owners of Cellar Door Provisions, will be teaching January's sourdough bread-baking workshop from their own kitchen! CDP is a community-focused bakery and cafe in Logan Square which uses simple, wholesome, and local ingredients.

Ethan and Tony will focus on cultivating a starter, mixing, fermenting, shaping and baking bread. They will have dough ready at various stages of the bread making process, and each stage will have a hands-on component. Bring pen and note pad to take notes. Each participant will be able to sample bread with butter.

This workshop is on Monday, January 19th from 6-8 pm at Cellar Door at 3025 W Diversey Avenue in Logan Square. Space is limited to 20 people, and tickets will go quickly! Buy them now for $15 on our Dabble page. We hope you'll join us for this unique opportunity!

Workshop #5: Fizz Out! Healing at Home with Kombucha

Row of Misty Kombucha Bottles - Five Point Holistic Health

Homestead Logan Square's fifth workshop is already next week. This month's focus is on brewing Kombucha, a fermented probiotic tea.

Drinking and making Kombucha is a wonderful winter-time activity. It is an enjoyable and restorative activity that promotes health during a time where fresh and varied produce is scarce. This workshop will provide attendees with a basic understanding of the 1) history of the fermentation of tea, 2) biological structure of the SCOBY culture used in the process, and 3) nutritional benefits of this vitamin rich and probiotic beverage.

Or presenter, Rachel Dennis, emphasizes low cost alternatives to expensive fermentation supplies and demonstrate how high quality, organic, and highly customizable Kombucha can be made for less than $10 a month and with a $20 (or less) total startup cost. She will also discuss the importance of homemade over commercial Kombucha and demonstrate ways to modify batches to help relieve symptoms of allergies, colds, anxiety and fatigue. Samples provided during this workshop will demonstrate these medicinal blends.

Rachel Dennis is a native Chicagoan who works to engage and facilitate good health, peer education, and accessibility in her local community. She was introduced to Kombucha 7 years ago and has been passionately working on her own concoctions for 3 years. Rachel also runs the “Chicago Skill Share and Education Access” online forum that connects community members, educators, experts, and students together to promote a community of autonomous DIY self-learners.

Fizz Out is on Monday, December 8th from 7-8:30 pm at the Logan Share, 2864 N Milwaukee Avenue. Visit our Facebook page for more information or our Dabble page to buy tickets.

Workshop #4: Holy Scrap! An Introduction to Stocks and Broths

4 Jars of Stock - Five Point Holistic Health

As we approach the winter season, one of the most powerful foods for supporting health and wellbeing is a rich and warming broth. In the next Homestead Logan Square workshop, presenter Melea Alexander will address why broth is good for you, how to prepare it, where to source quality ingredients, and how to store it in large quantities.

Mineral-rich and deeply nourishing, bone broth is a food which has been used traditionally by cultures world-wide as a first food for weaning children; during acute illness; for postpartum recovery; and as food for the elderly or those with chronic illness. Bone broth is known to promote good gut health, and is especially beneficial for those with allergies, food intolerances, and autoimmune conditions; it's a powerful food!

For participants who are vegetarian or vegan, Melea will offer recipes and techniques for plant- and fungus-based broths & congees that will give you an immune boost to keep you strong, healthy, and well-nourished year-round, too.

This workshop will take place at the Logan Share, the new Dill Pickle office space, at 2864 N Milwaukee from 6-8 pm on November 18th. For more information and to buy tickets, visit our Facebook page.
