This single day course is an introduction to the principles and practices of trauma informed massage and bodywork. A trauma-sensitive approach in bodywork is built on a foundation of understanding that trauma is not a rare occurrence. To be trauma-sensitive means awareness that many who come to us for touch-based work will at some point in their lives have experienced trauma. It also means having the ability to hold space for our clients to feel heard, safe, welcomed, and supported. This course will help you to better understand trauma and establish trauma-sensitive approaches within your bodywork practice.
We will explore:
Causes of trauma
Symptoms of trauma
How trauma manifests in the body, and how it potentially shows up in sessions
Simple grounding and stress-relieving practices to share with your clients
How massage can both help and overwhelm trauma survivors
How to support clients experiencing overwhelm
Staying within scope of practice
This workshop is primarily discussion based, but will also include basic exploration of breathing practices, and gentle physical exercises.
